Three Miles North Of Molkom

Three Miles North Of Molkom is a delightful and amusing documentary set during the aptly named No Mind Festival, an alternative therapy and meditation (hippy) festival, in Sweden. Set during the festival, rather than about the festival, this feels more like a fictional drama-comedy focusing on 6 characters and the borderline madness that goes on around, and within them. The participants get in touch with their ‘inner selves’ through a series of activities including ‘sharing groups’ with random strangers, shamanic sweat lodges and tantric sex. Or, as less-than-willing participant Nick, an Aussie rugby coach, puts it “a bunch of tree-hugging”.

The choreography of the film is so fluid, the coverage so complete and the dialogue is so drily funny that this shoestring movie is set to become an underground classic.

Sita is a goddess separated from her beloved Lord and husband Rama. Nina is an animator whose husband moves to India, then dumps her by e-mail. Three shadow puppets narrate both ancient tragedy and modern comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the Indian epic Ramayana. Set to the 1920’s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw, Sita Sings the Blues earns its tagline as “The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told. www.sitasingstheblues.com
